Meet Summaries

Boys: In a 'shake down' first meet, the boys got familiar(or re-acquainted) with the small circles and dry air of Manley Field House. There were a few baton adventures but plenty of solid efforts and good meet management by the squad. The boys broke into the scoring column with two top-6 event finishes: DMR--Mike Bott, Ron Ta, Tom Hopkins, Steve Houghmaster(4th); 4x1600 relay--Mike Bott, Sam Reedy, Tom Hopkins, Steve Houghmaster(5th). They also came close in the 4x400 with an 8th by the young squad of Ron Ta, Zac Karpinski, Ben Seigal and Jon Richardson. The team now enjoys a full training week prior to the 12/27 Christmas Relays at Hamilton College.

Girls: The usual relaxed start into the season was not evident as the girls powered their way to some excellent performances despite a music concert conflict that limited participation by several athletes. The DMR squad of Katie Rothenberg, Katie Bott, Sarah Kibby and Elizabeth McMahon stamped the hopes of the season with a first place effort that was only .5 seconds off their school record and currently stands as the top NYS performance. Not long after, another WG foursome--Stephanie McGrath, Maggie Nealer, Kayla Murphy, Colleen Smith--captured first in the 4x800 relay. In the SMR, Kibby and McGrath hooked up with sprinters Melissa Stevens and Olja Kuljanin to race to 2nd. The 4x1600 relay of Smith, Murphy, Nealer and Allison Reichel completed the Wildcat track effort with a 6th place. Triple jumpers Katie Bott and Brittany Jones teamed for 6th in that event while the last year's predictions of an improving throwers squad are coming through thanks to a 5th place finish in the shot put relay by Vanessa Mangovski and Janet Jackson.

Meet Summaries

Girls: Although sporting an alternate meet roster to provide more athlete opportunities, and despite sub-par field event performances, the Wildcats displayed enough depth to come away 4th in their 13 team Class A field. 28 of the team's 36 points were produced by the middle distance runners. The sole scoring field/sprint 2 person relays were in the triple jump where Katie Bott teamed with Brittany Jones to notch a 3rd place team score and in the 55hh hurdles with Sarah Kibby and Jessica Brien teaming for 5th place. The 200m duo of Megan Salisbury and Olja Kuljanin came close with 8th place in that event. The 1000m tandem of Kayla Murphy and Maggie Nealer raced to 4th. Next on the track was a dominating 600m relay of Elizabeth McMahon and Sarah Kibby. Though Elizabeth was bested for 1st by Liverpool's Kaitlyn Flynn, the Wildcats' 2-5 individual finishes won that event by a full 3 seconds over Liverpool. A freshman duo of Katie Riley and Allison Reichel made a run in the 3000m but came up two places shy in 8th despite a 10th place overall finish by the steadily improving Allison. Another top-10 non-scoring effort came from Natalie Seigal and Kristen Waters in the 400m, with sophomore Kristin announcing her potential via a PR 1:08.57 time. Katie Bott and Stephanie McGrath then teamed to run to 4th in the 800 meter relay. The final track event of the day paired Colleen Smith with Elizabeth McMahon in the 1500 meter relay. After two laps, Elizabeth ran away from the field to post the Section's best 1500m time at 4:54.74. Colleen struggled mid-race but finished strong in a personal record time of 5;16.90 and 6th place individual. That 1-6 performance for the 'cats was just enough to edge CNS by less than a second for 1st place. The team will attempt to shore up its field events and prepare for the 1/8 Kirschenheiter Relays. A select field will journey south on January 6th to compete in the Southern Tier Invitational on the Cornell University campus.

Boys: Busting up the roster a bit to get more athletes into the meet, the boys nevertheless showed overall improvements in their second meet of the season. That worst invitational fate, finishing 7th and one spot out of scoring, befell the 55hh duo of Ben Seigal and Jesse Beadle. Scoring for the 'cats came through two distance relays. In the 3200 meter, Tom Hopkins raced in the slower heat and made the most of his opportunity winning that heat with a personal best over 15 seconds faster than any previous effort. He also placed 11th overall in the meet. Matching that intensity was Mike Bott's 4th place finish in the fast heat. Their composite score gave them 3rd for the event. Running late in the meet after a personal best effort earlier in the 1000 meter, Steve Houghmaster overcame a slow start with a strong 2nd 800m as he raced to 7th overall with his second personal best of the meet. Combining with freshman Sam Reedy, the two took the 5th spot in that event. The boys now ready for the Kirschenheiter Relays in early January.

Meet Summaries

Girls: The girls earned a 5th place finish with some new faces in different events or competitive distances.  Elizabeth McMahon, Katie Bott, Stephanie McGrath and Colleen Smith notched the team's best finish with a 2nd in the DMR. A  thirds place effort were registered by the 4x800 relay of Katie Rothenberg, Kayla Murphy, Maggie Nealer and E.J. Reedy.  Vanessa Mangovski teamed with Janet Jackson to place an impressive 3rd in the Shot Put Relay, the best ever by a Wildcat duo. Janet made it even more memorable by breaking an indoor record dating back to the 81/82 season. Her 31-3.0 toss is the new Wildcats standard. The 'cats also scored 4th places in both the 4x400 and 4x1600 relays. Field events also chipped in two sixth place efforts in the Triple Jump and High Jump. Next up for the teams is the Grieve Invitational.

Boys: The meet started well, with the DMR squad of Mike Bott, Ron Ta, Tom Hopkins and Steve Houghmaster running one of WG's best DMR times in the past six years, placing 3rd with an 11:22.75 posting. That included an unofficial 55.8 split for Ron and 4:40.7 for Steve, both unofficial personal records. It was, unfortunately, flat sailing from there on as the boys were shut out of scoring in the rest of the meet. They did come close in the 4x400, placing 8th only 2 seconds out of 6th. And in the finale, a solid 4x1600(19:53.49) was unable to muscle its way up into a strong field, placing that infamous 7th. Select athletes will participate in the 1/6 Southern Tier Invitational and the entire team readies for a return to traditional invitational fare in the 1/10 Grieve Invitational.

Meet Summaries

Girls: The day was definitely a mixed bag for the girls. A long, long, long, too-long meet(9.5 hours) worked against athletes running relays only or doubling back in relays--despite stretch-out space for the team and outdoor warm-up opportunities. Few athletes in those event circumstances met performance targets. That said, highlights were a solid 1500m effort by Elizabeth McMahon, who wound up running the final 800m all alone but was able to post a very credible 4:47.20, an indoor TJ PR by Brittany Jones and another nice 400m split in the 4x400 by sophomore Kristen Waters. The girls turn right around for their 1/8 Monday night Kirschenheiter Relays, where they will mix up normal events a little.

Boys: Ditto for the boys. Most of the best performances came early in the meet in individual events. All three entries in the 1600m broke 5:00, with freshman Steve Houghmaster's 4th place 4:38.07 his best ever and a time personal record which qualifies him for the Nike Indoor National Championship Freshman Mile. Tom Hopkins also established an all-time personal record in the 1600 with a 4:56.59 clocking. Another PR was Ron Ta's 600m effort, and the most relay excitement for either team came from the boys' 4x800 which fought gamely in the top-5 for several legs before settling for 8th. Boys are back on the track 1/10 for the Grieve Invitational.

Meet Summaries

Girls: This is a 'mix' meet featuring most traditional events and the SMR/DMR relays for the final time in the Section III invitational season. The girls made the best of this last opportunity. The DMR squad of Katie Rothenberg, E.J. Reedy, Sarah Kibby and Elizabeth McMahon were running alone several laps into the final leg and went on to win in 12:42.06, the section's second best time of the season and a WG school record by over ten seconds. An entirely different 4x400 squad(Kirstin Waters/Stephanie McGrath/Maggie Nealer/Brianna McGraw) then ran under-target in placing 5th. Kayla Murphy PR'd but missed a scoring effort with 8th in the 1000m. E.J. and Elizabeth stepped back on the track with sprinters Olja Kuljanin and Megan Salisbury for the SMR. Trailing by almost half a lap heading into the final 800m leg, Elizabeth accepted the challenge. Following a opening lap pacing the leaders, she closed the gap in laps 2&3, then surged into the lead on the gun lap. Her 2:18.8 split powered the squad to first and another WG record with a 4:25.27 clocking. Doubling back in the 3000m following her strong 1200m DMR leg, Katie Rothenberg placed 4th in 11:22.80 while teammate Colleen Smith followed in 6th with an 11:23.03. The field events struggled in this meet. Alexis Halstead and teammate Olja both broke the 14' mark, with Alexis's 14-8.0 a personal record good enough for 6th. Better field event and throws performances will become the priority for these 'cats in future meets. They now prepare for the 1/22 Arcaro Invitational.

Meet Summaries

Girls: This was a good news-bad news evening for the girls. The bad was their worst team effort of the season, with five 7th or 8th place 'near-miss' efforts that might have pushed the team up several places. The good was a number of solid performances and three new school record efforts. Sarah Kibby set a 500 meter record with one of those 7th place finishes. So did Janet Jackson, who extended her WG shot put record. In the 3000m, Elizabeth McMahon ran uncontested after the 800 meter mark to take that event with a Section III leading time and WG school record. Other solid efforts came from Katie Rothenberg(1500), Katie Bott(800m) and Kristin Waters(4x400R). The girls enjoy several good practices days before their invitational season finale next Monday at their Constantino meet.

Boys: It was a difficult team night for the boys as they avoided getting 'skunked' only with a sixth place in the 1500m by Mike Bott. That was a great point, however, coming in an event that saw a new Section III record set by F-M's Tom Gruenewald and some fierce racing. Mike surrendered a chunk of meters to several runners mid-race, then came surging back to reclaim 6th on lap seven and kick in with an equivalent 32.2  last 200m. Mike's 4:22.56 was clearly his best race to date this season and evidence of improving strength. Two other Wildcat's enjoyed solid evenings on the track. Both Steve Houghmaster and Ron Ta ran dual 800's in the open eight and the 4x800R. A stumble at the start probably cost Steve a top-6 in the 800m as he ran a PR 2:06.68 for 8th place. Ron also PR'd in that event with a 2:11.56. Both then doubled back in the 4x800 with legs only a few seconds slower. That relay, however, was DQ'd for an exchange zone infraction. Another good distance effort came from sophomore Tom Hopkins as he placed 12th in the 3000m and broke the ten minute mark with a 9:57.54 personal record. The boys return to Manley Field House on 1/24 for the Constantino Invitational, their last before championship races begin.

Meet Summaries

Girls:

Boys: A down-day for the 'cats. No West Genesee finisher cracked the top-6 of any event. They were skunked. Hidden out of sight, however, were several nice efforts and PR's. Ethan Wojcik and Sam Reedy both improved their best times in the 1000m. Tom Hopkins did likewise in the 1600m while Steve Houghmaster ran sick in that event but refused to drop out. In the 3200m, Billy Gabriel made a legitimate claim to the best-8th-grade-distance-runner in Section III with his impressive first-ever 11:05.84 effort at that distance. Ron Ta then continued to PR parade with one in the 600, though he did not score. Disaster struck the 4x800 as opening leg Wojcik was tripped up in lap 2 and fell hard. The boys look to regroup, return to their strength events and move on to the OHSL Championship.

Meet Summaries

Girls: In a season marked by the unfortunate attrition of sprinters and field event athletes, the 'cats brought their most depth in the distance events. They did their best, rolling up the majority of team points while enjoying some superlative efforts. The 4x400 relay of Katie Bott, Kristen Waters, Stephanie McGrath and Sarah Kibby led off the meet with a school record and a 4:18.44 clocking that was the second best in both the A1 league and the meet. Katie Rothenberg followed with her best indoor 3000m for 3rd place. Next up was Elizabeth McMahon in the 1000m who powered unchallenged after lap 2 and set a second school record with the section's 2nd best time of the season. Stephanie McGrath chipped in a 6th place in the 600m and Colleen Smith contributed a 5th in the 1500m. The 4x800 squad of Rothenberg, McMahon, Maggie Nealer and Kibby then raced to first and the second fastest time of the championship. Off the track, Janet Jackson threw for 6th in the shot put and Brittany Jones and Megan Salisbury went 5-6 in the high jump. Up next is the Sectional Championship

Elizabeth McMahon -- League Champion, 1000m

League Champion -- 4x800 Relay

Boys: Outgunned by other larger and deeper A1 teams, the 'cats did what they could do. Seven of the 11 individual entry athletes registered personal bests. Chief among them were an impressive 4th place in the A1 3200 by Tom Hopkins as he lopped over 30 seconds off a previous PR to cross the line in 10:09.32 and Mike Bott's 3rd place in the 1600m where he lowered his previous best by over 7 seconds. Ethan Wojcik, Ron Ta, Ben Seigal, Sam Reedy and Jared Wojcik also enjoyed their best efforts of the season. A smaller group of Wildcats move on to the Sectional Championship next week.

Meet Summaries

Girls: This re-scheduled vacation-break championship spelled big problems for the girls. Missing were critical sprint/distance runners due to previously scheduled family trips and injury. The smaller team, however, performed well and there were Sectional Top-6th finishers for the 'cats. The 4x400 relay of Stephanie McGrath, Katie Bott, E.J. Reedy and Sarah Kibby, set the school record for the second time this season with a 4th place. Katie Rothenberg took 5th in the 3000m. Running her first 1000m of the season, Sarah Kibby, placed 6th. Emerging long sprinter, Katie Bott, raced out of a slower 300m heat to notch a freshman record in that event and finish 5th. The 4x800 Relay, with some weary doublers and triplers, ran credibly in placing 4th. Off the track, there was some real excitement. Janet Jackson uncorked a string of good throws in the shot. Her best, 31-9.0, was good for 3rd place and a re-set of her previous school record. And shaking off nervousness, Brittany Jones did everything right down the TJ runway as she tied the school record in that event with a 6th place. She also placed 6th in the high jump. Kissing-your-sister 7th place finishes went to Maggie Nealer in the 1500 and the 4x200 relay, both PR efforts. The season continues as a smaller group of Wildcats returns to the track for the 2/27 Select Meet.

Boys: A small six man team took to the Manley House floor and accomplished everything that it was asked to--and more. Without any qualifying sprinters or field event athletes, four of the distance runners and hurdler Ben Seigal posted seasonal personal records. And Tom Hopkins was only a second off in the 3200 meters as he registered a Sectional top-6 performance. Steve Houghmaster and Mike Bott both dipped under the 4:40 mark in the 1600m as they placed 4th and 5th respectively for Class A. Ron Ta ran his fastest 600m for a top-10 finish while Ben Seigal dropped two tenths from his personal record with a 7th in the 55hh. And the 4x800 squad of Ta, Houghmaster, Sam Reedy and Bott logged the 'cats best time in that event with their 6th place. PR's and scoring in 4 of 6 events entered spelled a good end to the team season. Steve Houghmaster will advance to the State Qualifier Meet next week.

Meet Summaries

Girls: It was only disappointment for 1500 meter school record holder, Elizabeth McMahon. Running injured, she was unable to match either her own earlier paces or the pace of competitors and placed 5th in that event, ending hopes of returning to her 2nd indoor State Championship. Other Wildcats were more successful. The 4x400 relay of Katie Bott, Stephanie McGrath, Maggie Nealer and Kayla Murphy performed above their target in placing 3rd. E.J. Reedy ran a personal record in the 600m as did Bott in the 300m. And the 4x800 relay of Katie Rothenberg, McGrath, Bott and Sarah Kibby clocked WG's best 4x800 Relay time of the season. Several 'cats will continue training and competing with the Select Meet and the March Nike National Championship ahead.

Boys: The lone boys entry, Steve ran a tactically perfect 1600m and came up only one place short of a trip to the State Championship. Steve ran with the front group through the 800m, then matched the surge of the 2-3 runners for two laps. Their senior/junior strength was a bit too much for Steve as they pulled away in the late going and held off his solid final lap. Steve's 4:36.19 was, however, another personal record and a solid racing experience. Steve will be back on the track in the Select Meet as he continues preparing for the Nike National Freshman Mile on March 11th in Landover, Maryland. That race will gather 30 of the nation's best freshman milers.

Meet Summaries

Boys: Almost four months after the start of his indoor track season, Steve Houghmaster traveled south to Landover, Maryland for the Nike Indoor National Championship Freshman Mile race on March 11th. Thirty-five 9th grade runners from across the country assembled to determine the best freshman milers in America. Steve's solid 1600m time at the Section III Select Meet propelled him into the third, and fastest, heat of the race. The race-plan was simple: to run even-paced laps in the first half mile, then work to stay close to the lead pack before giving it all up in the final lap. Steve was patient in the first lap, then went off-plan and took the lead, holding it until lap 6 when he was passed by the pack he'd been pacing. Steve dropped all the way to 7th place and entered the last lap in a precarious position. But the Houghmaster kick was still there. Out of the first turn, he powered himself into 6th and took aim at 5th place. He battled down the stretch,  missing the 5th spot by only hundredths of a second. His 6th place finish put him on the medal stand and awarded him the honor of being designated a Nike All-American. It was a great finish to a long and sometimes difficult Wildcats Indoor Track season.
