Congratulations also to winning relays: 4x800(Jessica Koes/Becky Webster/Stephanie Bartlett/Kerry Banazek); 4x400(Lindsey McConnelee/Adriane Hulchanski/Katie Bubnack/Jen Bott); 4x100(Alexis Tearney/Adriane Hulchanski/Caley Thompson/Vickie Trusskey).

Meet Results

Score: C-NS -- 124, WG -- 17

Meet Summary

The Wildcats were hit by a second freight train as they traveled to 'the other' National Division powerhouse, CNS. Shorthanded due to missing runners, the 'cats' mustered improved performances by weight-event athletes, but overall were unable to contend with the strong CNS squad.

Meet: West Genesee vs. Oswego, April 22, 2002

Meet Results

Score: WG -- 82.5, Oswego -- 58.5

Meet Summary

Most of this meet was conducted in strong winds and blowing snow. With the Pole Vault cancelled because of a slippery runway, the goal became to compete hard and leave with a victory--which the team achieved. Highlights of the meet included the 1-2 400IH finish by 'middle-distance' runners Katie Bubnack/Kerry Banazek, Laura Mowers' first place discus throw in tough conditions and perhaps the demise of the team tent in the high winds.  A warm bus, a dinner stop and an impromptu song-fest on the ride home rounded out a tough, though successful, Monday.

Outstanding Performances

Laura Mowers - Discus winner

Jen Bott - come from behind 400m winner

Katie Bubnack - 400IH/3000m winner

Meet: West Genesee vs. Rome Free Academy, April 24, 2002

Meet Results

Score:  RFA -- 92, WG -- 49

Meet Summaries

Poor Field/Weight team performances, and the loss of the relay events, dashed any hopes the Wildcats harbored of an upset at Rome. Masked by the final score were a number of solid individual efforts by the Wildcats, with improvement being the name-of-the-game for this season. The 'cats will have to re-group and kick it up a notch in their quest for a winning season against a solid Baldwinsville squad.

Outstanding Performances

Alexis Trusskey - 13.2 100m PR

Kerry Banazek - 5:02.7 1500m season PR

Jen O'Sullivan - significant 1500m improvement

Vickie Trusskey - Pole Vault

Meet: Rome Invitational/Colonie Relays - May 4, 2002

Meet Results

Meet Summary

The team split this weekend, with the larger contingent competing in the Rome Invitational for girls. There, a lack of focus seemed the problem as many athletes failed to improve upon their performances. Exceptions were significant PR's by Becky Webster in the 3000m and Lindsey McConnelee in the 400IH.

Stephanie Bartlett, Kerry Banazek, Christina Phelan and Katie Bubnack made the trip down the NY Thruway to compete in the 4x1500m event at the Colonie Relays. While failing to meet their target time, the girls established an OHSL record for that event.

Outstanding Performances

Becky Webster - 3000m significant improvement PR

Lindsey McConnelee - 400IH significant improvement PR

Kerry Banazek and Christina Phelan qualified for, and made the overnight trip, to compete in this year's Loucks Invitational. Christina Phelan ran a significant 1600 meter race, registering a PR for that event and a PR as well for her equivalent 1500m. Christina placed 20th in this outstanding field of 35. Fighting off a week of illness, Kerry Banazek took the track with several of New York's finest steeplechasers. Literally willing herself through the event, Kerry was a 5th place medal winner with a very credible 7:36.41 time in a race that even included a crash between her and another contestant at the finish line.

Meet Summary

School conflicts again haunted the Lady Wildcats as several team members were unable to compete. Nevertheless, the team enjoyed a host of personal bests and excellent efforts. Kudos to 800m Divisional Champion Katie Bubnack for an exciting come-from-behind victory in that event. Also, in a very gutsy 3000m race, senior Kerry Banazek pushed the pace early and finished a close second in a new school record time of 10:39.7. Also significant was a PR shot put by Tamara Graham and a Pole Vault leap by Vickie Trusskey that tied the school record.

Meet Summary

Minus the services of two Sectional qualifiers, the remaining team members pulled together for a host of PR's and several top-6 scoring finishes. Captain Kerry Banazek led the way with perhaps the finest girls Sectional performance in school history. On 5/22, she established a new Section III record in the 2000m Steeplechase with a blistering 7:12.9 time that ranks #3 in the state.  Kerry returned for the main competition the next day and smashed her own school record in the 3000m, lowering it 9 seconds to 10:31.0 with a 3rd place effort behind nationally ranked FM runners Laurel Burdick and Lauren Heron.  Not yet done, Kerry toed the 1500m start line with an elite field that again featured Burdick and Heron. The late season Sectional surprise in the 400m event, Alexis Tearney, continued to improve. In only her second open 400, Alexis powered to 3rd with a 60.8 and put herself in the thick of things for the State Qualifier meet.

A third senior, Audra Smith, stepped it up also, throwing PR's in both the Shot Put and Discus. Other PR performances were registered by Allison Hulchanski(400m); Stephanie Bartlett(1500m) and Christina Phelan(1500m). The 4x400 and 4x800 relay squads placed 5th and 4th respectively.
