Meet Summary: Chilly, but better than expected weather kicked off the Wildcats 2008 dual meet season. Eager to get going after almost five weeks of practices, the Wildcats 11 of the 17 events. On the track, the distance runners enjoyed a good opening. They won the 4x800, went 1-2 in the 1500 behind a solid debut by 8th grader Alex Incaudo, then swept both the 800 and 3000 meter events. Long sprinters and hurdlers also fared well. Katie Bott won her first 400IH event, then returned to capture the 400m and opened the winning 4x400 relay. Bri McGraw took the 100 meter and placed 2nd in the 200. Despite a credible 54.3, the girls were unable to catch a fast Oswego 4x100 squad. In the jumps, it was a bunch of 2nds for the 'cats, with Olja Kuljanin taking three point finishes in the high jump and long jump while Katie Naton was second-best in the triple jump and pole vault. Throwers flexed their muscles as they swept both events, led by Vanessa Mangovski in the shot put and Jessica Andrianos in the discus, whose 104-10 toss is one of the section's best to date. The team faces a formidable F-M squad next week during the spring break.

Meet Summary: It was, as they say, an old-fashioned butt kicking. F-M dominated in almost every area using key field and sprint individuals and their vaunted distance squad to run from and jump over the Wildcats. The Hornets swept the distance events, the first time the 'cats have not been able to muster a meet points in over a decade. Their best performance came from 8th grader Alex Incaudo, who clocked an 11:30.5 in the 3000m. Bri McGraw earned the Wildcats some credibility in sprints with a 2nd in the 100 meter and a win in the 200. In the jumps, it was also a tough afternoon as no WG athlete broke into the top-3 in the pole vault, high jump, long jump or triple jump. Throwers saved the day(and some pride) for the team as Jessica Andrianos, Vanessa Mangovski and Rasha Awwad swept the discus. Andrianos and Mangovski then went 1-2 in the discus to score 16 of the team's total points. Better days are surely ahead for the 'cats, but they will need more presence in the field events and distance runners will need to quickly put this day behind them.

Meet Summary: Bouncing back from a tough home defeat at the hands of Fayetteville-Manlius, the Wildcats closed stronger than they started as they were challenged by a motivated and improving Central Square squad. The hosts immediately got the attention of the 'cats by taking the 4x800 relay with a strong effort. West Genesee came back with wins in the 400IH(Katie Bott) and the 100m(Bri McGraw. To that they added a 1-2 finish in the 1500m(Alex Incaudo/Colleen Smith). With a 1-2-3 sweep of the discus, things were rolling well for the 'cats when they hit the brakes again with a DQ in the 4x100 relay. Meanwhile, Central Square had been winning the high jump, triple jump, long jump and pole vault events. The meet was tight, and became tighter as WG managed only a third in the 100hh. At that point, the 'cats ran off four consecutive first places, including 1-2 finishes in the 800 and 200 meter events, to ice the West Genesee victory. Many personal records by teammates and summery weather made the trip and enjoyable day.

Meet Summary: With many athletes absent due to the Junior Prom, the Wildcats were not at full force but still used the warm weather opportunity to get some bigger meet experience(team attendance was lower than normal). Sprinters fared pretty well, with most establishing or equaling personal records in their events. Bri McGraw exploded out of a slower heat to place 5th in the 200m with her best time to date. Same for Paige Copeland, who garnered 3rd in the novice 200m. Field events were a mixture of success and disappointment. The pole vaulters were unable to make opening height, with the same fate occurring in the high jump. Katie Naton and Kelly Maestri, however, both posted their best triple jumps of the season, with Katie placing 8th behind and all-time personal record. Throwers also saw mixed results, with second places going to Vanessa Mangovski in the shot put and to Jessica Andrianos in the discus. Form issues seemed to plague all the throwers, however. Back on the track, the WG distance squad did not do as well as hoped. The 4x800 placed 2nd but with a time slower than expected. Katie Bott placed 2nd in the 400m with her best time of the season, and the same was true for Katie Rothenberg who took third in the 1500m with a seasonal PR. The wide smiles were reserved for the novice 800m tandem of freshman Nicole Olson and Copeland. Buried in the pack for three quarters of the race, Paige exploded with a 35 second final 200, passing 4-5 runners on the curve and overtaking the leader with about 60 meters in the race. Nicole tagged along for the ride and finished second for a WG 1-2 finish in that event, proving again that experience is the best teacher. The team prepares for their next dual-meet opponent: Nottingham on May 1st.

Meet Summary: The weather started typical for this time of spring and ended windy, cloudy and chilly. At least no rain. The girls, some slated for the Chittenango Invitational the next day, reduced their number of events and won the right points to take home a victory. Amid the job-focused attitudes of the athletes and the sliding weather, some solid performances were registered. Running alone, Katie Rothenberg hammered out a good 1500m victory in 5:15.9. Colleen Smith tasted her first 400IH and came home first. 8th graders Paige Copeland and Alex Incaudo continued to discover inner talents with fine 65.5 400 meter and 2:33.8 800 meter runs respectively. Kayla Murphy and Katie Riley finally returned from injuries to go 1-2 in the 3000 meter. And the throwers continued to announced themselves as a rising force as Jessica Andrianos, Vanessa Mangovski and Rasha Awwad generated 1-2-3 sweeps of both the shot put and discus. The best performance of the meet may have gone to Katie Bott as she ran away from the field in the 200m with a 26.5 clocking.
Outstanding Performances: Paige Copeland(400m); Katie Bott(200m); Alex Incaudo(800m)

Meet Summary: With official results still pending, it was clearly a night of mixed results for the Wildcats. Some meet goals were achieved, others not. One of those successful goals was a school record performance in the SMR, The 2000 record of Tracy McConnelee, Morgan Doherty, Kristine Miller and Katie Bubnack was dropped to #2 by Katie Bott(400), Brianna McGraw(200), Jamy Bliss(200) and Katie Rothenberg(800). The foursome barely missed a race victory as they registered their 4:26.96 second-place effort. Though not going the PR route, Vanessa Mangovski(Shot Put) and Jessica Andrianos(Discus) enjoyed first-place invitational finishes. Frustration continued for the pole vaulters. Following their Nottingham meet were their hosts conceeded all points and did not set up the vault pit, the event at Chittenango was halted due to rain, then cancelled. They will hope for better weather in upcoming meets. Alex Incaudo was selected to run in the Fleet Feet Mile and found herself on the start line with a formidable array of the area's best that included the Fayetteville-Manlius armada of national championship XC runners. And although falling off the pace after a good opening 800m, Alex learned a lot from the experience.

Meet Summary: On a rain-threatening day that never made good on its threat, the Wildcats ran their record to 4-1. The 'cats, needing both a win and work, stacked as many events as possible. Following an improved but still disappointing 4x800 victory, a fall by Nicole Olson in the 400IH wiped out another event victory, though Olson bounced right up to take third. Bri McGraw, Jamy Bliss and Kelly Maestri immediately created some breathing room with a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100m. But the Maroons bounced right back to surprise WG by taking 1-2 in the 1500m where Colleen Smith placed third. The 4x100 squad, got the Wildcats right back on track with a decent-effort first. Then Katie Bott and Paige Copeland went 1-3 in the 400m, and the gap began to open. Jessica Brien followed with her first victory in the 100hh. Determined to improve on her 1500m effort, C. Smith led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 800m. Off the track, meanwhile, the 'cats were getting mixed results. The high jumpers were shut when they failed to report on time and lack a proper warm-up. The pole vaulters, also were involved in a strange situation where the home team did not have a proper extension, and vaulting had to start at 7' 0". None made that opening height. Countering those disappointments, however, were a 1-3 finish in the Long Jump by Maestri and N. Olson. And Katie Naton captured 1st in the Long Jump. Back on the track, the 'cats continued to apply the pressure with a sweep of the 200 by Bott, Bliss and McGraw. Alex Incaudo then teamed with Katie Rothenberg to go 1-2 in the 3000m, both running their bests of the season. It was no contest in the final event as the girls ran away with the 4x400 in a decent 4:24.2. The final chapter of the victory were painted by the throwers. First in the discus by Jessica Andrianos and a 1-3 in the shot put by Vanessa Mangovski and Andrianos closed the book for the day. The 'cats now anticipate the ES-M Invitational on Friday, May 9th.

Meet Summary: Things began clicking for a number of athletes at this meet. Personal Records were the order of the day for a number of athletes, starting with Katie Rothenberg who clocked an 11:13.01 3000 meter enroute to a 2nd place. 8th graders Paige Copeland and Alex Incaudo both registered seasonal bests in the 800 meter as the both placed top-8 in the 800 meter. Following them was Katie Bott and Jamie Kurtz, both with PR's in the 400 meter. A 4x800 Relay, with three of four members running their best splits of the season, followed. Aida Rivera ran her best 200 meter of the season, as did Colleen Smith with her 4th place in the 2000 meter steeplechase. Off-track, Jessica Andrianos took 2nd place in the discus with her PR for 2008 while Rasha Awwad did the same in the discus. Kelly Maestri had her best meet of the season as she placed 6th in the Long Jump with a personal record and grabbed another one in the triple jump. The stage was set for an exciting night of 1500 meter running. Kaitlyn Richards teamed with Jessica Emanuelli to both run personal bests. Kaitlyn's was good for 2nd in the Novice 1500. Next Alex Incaudo stepped back on the track for the open 1500. Sitting comfortably in 5th place through 2 laps, Alex went to work in the third lap and moved up to third. A strong surge in laps 4 brought her home in an excellent 5:08.97 for 2nd place. All that was left was for the 4x400 relay to run the season's best in placing 3rd. A good night for the 'cats.

Meet: WG vs. Corcoran, May 13, 2008
Meet Results
Score: WG-82, Corcoran-59
Record: 5 - 1(2nd Place, CNYCL American Division)
Meet Summary: Going in, coaches had some concerns about match-ups. The West Genesee distance squad would more than hold their own, but how would the 'cats fare in the sprints and field events? Early domination in the 4x800 relay and 400IH hurdle events got things going well, but the Cougars then swept the 100, placed 2-3 in the 1500, won the 4x100 and grabbed 2nd and 3rd places in the 400m before going 1-2 in the 100 hurdles. It was only late on the track that the 'cats turned the tables, sweeping the 800, taking 1-3 in the 200 and 1-2 in the 3000. They capped off their bookend track strength with a convincing win in the 4x400. It would be needed as Corcoran dominated the field events, winning all four and sweeping the triple jump. As in the past, the throwers were solid contributors to victory as they won both shot and discus and a 1-2 in the discus. Corcoran was able to win events, but in the end lacked enough depth to upset the Wildcats who could claim an admirable 5-1 dual meet record and 2nd place in their division.

Meet Summary: Shades of 2007 and a long, hot, construction-slowed thruway trek to Utica-Proctor. A backway entrance to Rt. 81 was supposed to avoid Syracuse construction, but the team bus promptly hit highway work outside Tully. The end result was 40 minutes wasted inching along in traffic and mounting concern that competitors in the early events would be out of luck. But some luck was with the Wildcats as they arrived at Maine-Endwell High School with about seven minutes to spare before the 4x100. The relay fared poorly because of the rush but athletes for subsequent had more warm-up time. And warming up was difficult as the temperatures gradually fell amid the rain and sporatic breezes. It was not exactly sprinters heaven, and most of the fast-twitch athletes had tough days in their events. Those results could have been the same for distance, who also ran in breezy rains and cool temperatures. But no. Almost all those athletes ran personal bests, testament to their determination in bad conditions. Chief among those was Kaitlyn Richards, who lopped almost a half-minute off her 3000m best. Who knows what she and others would have done on a warm, sunny day. And not to be outdone by the long runners, Jessica Andrianos continued her climb with an impressive 109-8 discus toss. Competitive toughness was what the Wildcats needed to demonstrate--and most did just that. On to the championships....

Meet Summary: A good team effort was forged on excellent individual efforts as the Wildcats encountered the F-M juggernaut. Katie Bott began the day with a personal record 2nd place in the 400IH. The 1500m was owned by F-M, but following them was Alex Incaudo with a great PR 5:04.31 and teammate Katie Rothenberg with their 3-4 finish. A predictable 2nd place in the 4x800 led to Bri McGraw's 6th in the 100m which in turn set up one of West Genesee's signature races of her career as she exploded in the final 100m of the 400 to capture a league championship with a 58.76 effort. Rothenberg returned to the track for a 4th in the 3000m, followed by teammate Allison Reichel in 5th. Bott wasn't done. She speed to first in the 200m with McGraw adding a 5th. In the water event, the 2000 steeplechase, Colleen Smith logged her seasonal best as she ran 2nd. The 800 meter was another F-M dominated event, but Incaudo and Amanda Brown snuck in for 5th and 6th. Narrowly missing a exchange zone violation, the 4x100 relay placed 5th and the meet ending 4x400 relay raced to 2nd with the season's best time. Jumps were again a challenge for the 'cats as they were blanked in those events. But the throwers again came through. Vanessa Mangovski won the shot put while teammate Jessica Andrianos took the discus. Four league champions marked a good day for the cats.

Meet Summary: Not a good day for the Wildcats. Hang-your-hat-day turned out to be a missed peg for the team as a group funk seemed to pervade the team tent at a breezy but mild Rome Free Academy track. Personal records and relay seasonal PR's were in short supply on this day, and even the 4x800 squad failed to notch a top-6 scoring effort for the first time in years. One step-up performances were by Vanessa Mangovski, who launched herself into the Open Qualifier meet with a 6th place finish in the Shot Put. The other effort of note was recorded by 8th grader Alex Incaudo, whose 5th place in the 3000m also came with a personal record despite being caught alone most of the race between a front and trail pack. Alex also moves on to the Open Qualifier in the 1500m event.
It's been a good '08' battle by team members against various adversities. The team, however, will have to wait for '09' to demonstrate top-5 sectional strength--and to do so they will need to develop more competitive field events and sprints. Both are team goals.
Outstanding Performances: Vanessa Mangovski(Shot Put)/Alex Incaudo(3000m)
Meet: Section III Open Qualifier, June 5, 2008
Meet Results
Meet Summary: A select group of Wildcats made the short bus ride north the Cicero-North Syracuse for a shot at States and personal records as well as to gain experience for future Open Qualifier competitions. While PR's eluded most of the Wildcats, they gained experience. Hoping to crack 10:00 in the 4x800 relay, the squad of Alex Incaudo, Paige Copeland, Katie Rothenberg and Katie Bott fell short with a 10:06.75. But it was a team PR for the season and will bring three of the four back as two freshman and a junior, so the future looks good for that event. Back too will be Vanessa Mangovski and Jessica Andrianos, both who placed fourth in the Shot Put and Discus respectively. Incaudo fell victim to big meet nerves and ran too conservatively in the 1500m well short of her seasonal PR, but a fabulous 8th grade varsity season is hers nonetheless. The highlight of the day was Katie Bott's personal record in the 400m as she placed second with a nearly perfect race and met the 3rd qualifier standard to advance to states in Buffalo.
Outstanding Performances: Katie Bott(400m)
Meet: New York State Track & Field Championship, June 13 & 14, 2008
Meet Results
Meet Summary: The goals--PR/top-15 finish--eluded her, but Katie Bott got her first Outdoor Track State Championship experience as she held her seed, placing 17th in her 20 person Division I 400m field. Not as 'sharp' as during her Open Qualifier effort, Katie went out hard but was unable to hold pace through turn two and didn't have the legs for the finish sprint. That's correctable. 2009 could be a great year.
